Edit the text in a PDF

Fix a typo, change a date, correct a name — by clicking the text itself and typing, with the original font preserved.

Free · no sign-up · your file never leaves your device

Most free PDF tools cannot really edit text. They paint a white box over the old words and drop new ones on top, which looks obviously wrong the moment the background is anything but plain white, and falls apart entirely on coloured or scanned pages.

PeppyPDF edits the document properly. When you retype a line, the text object inside the PDF is rewritten using the font already embedded in your file, so the replacement matches the size, weight and colour of everything around it. The background is untouched because nothing needed covering.

How to edit the text in a PDF

Three steps, and nothing to install.

Open the PDF and choose Edit text

Drag your file in and pick Edit text from the toolbar. The first click prepares the text engine, which takes a moment on large documents.

Click the line you want to change

The text becomes editable exactly where it sits on the page. Type your correction, or select everything and delete to remove the line entirely.

Click away, then export

Clicking elsewhere commits the change. Press Export PDF when you are done — Ctrl+Z undoes any edit at any point.

What makes this one different

Your document’s own font

Replacement text is written with the font embedded in the file, not a lookalike, so corrections do not announce themselves as corrections.

No white boxes

Because the original text is genuinely removed rather than covered, edits work on coloured backgrounds, shaded tables and letterhead.

A sensible fallback

Some documents embed fonts that cannot render new characters — accented or non-Latin text, for instance. The editor detects this automatically and keeps your replacement as editable text instead of producing garbled glyphs.

Everything else is still there

Text editing sits alongside annotation, signing and page tools, so a quick correction does not mean opening a second app.

Questions

The things people ask most about this tool.

Can I edit any PDF’s text?

You can edit any PDF that contains real text. Scanned documents are pictures of text, so there is nothing to edit until they are put through OCR, which PeppyPDF does not currently do.

Why does clicking select a whole paragraph?

PDFs store text in blocks rather than lines, and some generators write an entire paragraph as one block. Editing that block edits all of it — the same behaviour you would see in desktop PDF editors.

Can I change the font, size or colour?

Yes. Select the text object after editing and use the properties panel on the right to adjust font, size, weight and colour.

Does the text reflow when I make it longer?

No. PDF is a fixed-layout format, so surrounding paragraphs do not move. Long replacements wrap within their own box rather than pushing the rest of the page down.

Is the edited file still a normal PDF?

Yes. The export is a standard PDF that opens correctly in Acrobat, Preview, Chrome and every other reader.
